Argentina defeat Colombia 2-0 in World Cup Qualifier
La Albiceleste make it three wins from three
Goals from Lautaro Martinez and Joaquin Correa seal comfortable victory
Argentina maintained their perfect start to CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Colombia in Barranquilla on Tuesday.
Goals from Lautaro Martinez and Joaquin Correa either side of halftime secured the three points for La Albiceleste, who now have a maximum of nine points from their opening three matches.
The result leaves Colombia with just one point from their first three games and increases the pressure on coach Carlos Queiroz.
Argentina were without the suspended Lionel Messi, but they still had too much quality for a Colombia side that lacked creativity and cutting edge.
Martinez opened the scoring in the 7th minute, heading home Angel Di Maria's cross from close range.
Correa doubled the lead in the 55th minute, finishing off a fine move involving Di Maria and Rodrigo De Paul.
Colombia rarely threatened the Argentina goal, with their best chance falling to Duvan Zapata in the first half, but the Atalanta striker headed wide from six yards out.
Argentina could have added to their lead in the second half, but Martinez and Di Maria both missed good chances.
However, the two goals were enough to seal a comfortable victory for La Albiceleste, who now look well-placed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
### **Marcos Acuña** The Sevilla left-back was a constant threat down the flank, providing width and creativity for Argentina. He was unlucky not to score in the first half when his shot was saved by David Ospina. ### **Leandro Paredes** The Paris Saint-Germain midfielder was excellent in the center of the park, controlling the tempo of the game and breaking up Colombia's attacks. ### **Rodrigo De Paul** The Udinese midfielder was another standout performer for Argentina. He was involved in both goals, providing the assist for Martinez's opener and playing a key role in the move that led to Correa's goal. ### **Lautaro Martinez** The Inter Milan striker scored his third goal in three World Cup qualifiers. He was a constant menace to the Colombia defense and could have scored more on another night. ### **Joaquin Correa** The Lazio forward scored his first goal for Argentina since 2017. He was a lively presence in attack and caused Colombia problems with his pace and movement.
